How Do You Change Your Own Engine Oil?

Initially, you should check your owner’s manual. It should tell you what type of oil your vehicle requires. Once you’ve bought your oil, follow these steps below:

  1. You will need to jack your car up with jack stands or steel ramps.
  2. Underneath the engine, locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. Put an oil basin underneath the plug, then you can unscrew the plug and let the old oil drain out completely – this could take at least 15 minutes. When you are certain all of the oil has drained, go ahead and replace the plug.
  3. Then you should locate your oil filter, and remove it with a wrench specifically for the oil filter. You should be expecting some extra oil to drain out when you remove the filter. Be sure to keep the basin underneath to catch it.
  4. Grab the new filter, making sure to rub some oil around the rubber seal – this provides your filter with a watertight seal, and it is an essential step.
  5. Put the new filter in its place, and tighten it by hand.
  6. With the old oil completely drained, the new filter in the proper place, and the oil cap removed, pour the specified amount of new oil into the oil tank. You can find it in your owner’s manual if you aren’t unsure, then replace the oil.
  7. Lastly, you should check your oil level with the dipstick to be sure it’s right. If you are still low, you can add an additional ounce and check the level until it’s at the proper amount.
